This project is a case study of Cairo north power station focusing on control system. This project was chosen because of the knowledge that can be gathered from it. In addition to, Cairo north power station used a combined cycle which is improvement of both simple cycles (gas and steam cycles) increasing the generated power and overall efficiency.
The Cairo North Power Station consists of two modules each one produce 750 MW. Each module contains the following is two gas turbines each of 250 MW capacity and two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and one steam turbine 250 MW capacity, so the total power is 1500 MW. The first module was manufactured by Mitsubishi Company and the second module was manufactured by General Electric Company.
The fuel used for gas turbine is the primary fuel is Natural gas and the secondary fuel is Solar. Gas turbine exhaust gases are utilized to produce steam from the two HRSG to generate 250 MW from the steam turbine without using additional fuel. Cairo north power station is considered one of the best stations in Egypt regarding the efficiency. The efficiency of the combined cycle may reach to 60% while the efficiency of the conventional power station not exceeds 40%.
This project explains the fundamentals of theoretical power plant cycles at any power station operating. Cairo north power station is using combined cycle theory, which explain the gas turbine, steam turbine and how to use the heat recovery steam generator instead the boilers in order to reduce heat losses of the exhaust gases of gas turbine to increase overall efficiency and reduce environmental impact and prepare the superheated steam required for the operation of steam turbines. This case study demonstrates the components of combined cycle and learns its functions.
Most of the previous projects searching in power station are concentrating only on the operating of gas turbine and steam turbines but this project goes far in to study the control systems and auxiliary system. The control systems in the power station are not so simple and depend on the level of the operator experience that supply the operator with courage and intrepidity to make decisions fast enough to prevent severe problems. From this point of view this project demonstrates the fundamentals of control system which can help to get into this path.
chapter one contains an introduction only, chapter two will be explained the thermal cycles for gas turbine and of steam turbine, chapter three are explained in detail the components of the module of gas turbine inside the station north of Cairo, chapter four are explained later in Module of steam turbine power plant north of Cairo, then chapter five will be explained fundamentals of speedtronic mark vi control system of gas turbine unit and chapter six will be explained Auxiliary System and lubrication system of gas turbine unit .
